How many board games fit in a Kallax?
There is no reliable games-per-cube number: box dimensions, orientation and inserts change the answer. Start with the 33.6 cm square opening IKEA specifies, then check the measurements for the games you actually own.
There is no fixed number of board games that fit in a Kallax cube. IKEA specifies a 33.6 × 33.6 cm opening; the useful count depends on the width of each box’s spine, its other dimensions, how you turn it and whether an insert takes up space. Check your own boxes before buying another unit.
Measure the opening and the boxes
Start with the shelf you own, including any drawers, doors or dividers. IKEA’s Kallax buying guide lists 33 × 33 cm inserts for the compartments. An inserted cube will not have the same usable opening as an empty one. IKEA lists a 39 cm overall depth for one current unit, but that outside measurement is not a promise of 39 cm clear storage depth.
For each box, check three things:
- Front face: Will one of the two broad-face dimensions clear the square opening in the orientation you want?
- Depth and spine: How far back will the box reach, and how much width does its spine use alongside the next box?
- Real clearance: Do an insert, protective sleeve, protruding lid or the way you handle the box change the space you need?
The number of games in a cube follows from those measurements. Dividing the opening by an assumed “average box thickness” gives a neat answer for a box that may not exist in your collection. A single oversized box can change the plan; several small boxes can share space in ways a catalogue average would miss.
Use the visual shelf as a planning check
In your collection, mark your games as owned and select Box size. The Almanac sorts the owned boxes by recorded volume, with depth used to break ties. Switch to My order to move individual boxes between the visual cubes. The tracking guide explains the other arrangements and which records sync with iOS.
The shelf model uses a conservative 33 cm limit for its cube placement check. When all three box measurements are present, it flags a box that fails that check and displays a placeholder. When measurements are missing, it also uses a labelled placeholder. Neither case proves how a physical copy will fit: catalogue dimensions can be absent, vary by edition or miss sleeves and inserts. Open the linked game records below to inspect recorded dimensions where available, then measure a box you plan to place tightly.
The size sort is an order for inspecting larger recorded boxes first. It does not calculate a guaranteed games-per-cube total, recommend buying another unit or solve the arrangement around your particular inserts. For the physical shelf, follow the load and wall-anchoring guidance for your Kallax model; the cited Singapore configuration lists a 13 kg maximum load per shelf.
Decide with your actual collection
Use the visual shelf to find the awkward cases before moving furniture: boxes shown at placeholder size, boxes flagged too large for its model and the broadest recorded boxes in Box size order. Measure those first. Then place the boxes you reach for often where they are easy to lift out; that is a personal arrangement, not a rule the catalogue can infer.
The shelf can show what you own and give you a useful layout sketch. Your physical Kallax, its inserts and your actual editions settle how many boxes fit.
